Scope and Motivation

Hydrogen is a versatile energy carrier for transportation, industry, and electricity generation. When produced using renewable electricity, it can support decarbonization and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Its high specific energy and compatibility with fuel cells make it relevant to heavy transport and applications requiring extended operating ranges. However, its environmental benefits depend on production pathways, while conversion losses, storage requirements, and infrastructure costs remain important challenges.

Power electronics are essential to efficient and scalable hydrogen production and utilization. In electrolysis, converters regulate voltage and current, affecting hydrogen production rates, energy consumption, and operating conditions. Appropriate converter design and control can reduce losses, limit current ripple, and support equipment reliability. Power electronics also connect electrolyzers and fuel cells to renewable sources, storage systems, and electrical grids, enabling operation under variable generation and demand.

Further development requires advances in converter topologies, control, thermal management, condition monitoring, and fault tolerance. Accurate electrical models and digital twins can support system design, optimization, and diagnostics. Addressing power quality, safety, and grid integration is necessary for deployment at scale. This session brings together research on these challenges to advance reliable, efficient, and economically viable power electronics solutions for hydrogen production, storage, and utilization across sectors.
